Candle Safety Precautions

Caring for your coconut candle.
Our coconut shell candles are made to be lit, savoured, and enjoyed slowly. Like all candles, they ask for a little care and attention. Please read the following before lighting for the first time.

Before you light

Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn — this keeps the flame clean and prevents excess smoke. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from draughts, open windows, ceiling fans, and air vents. An unsettled flame burns unevenly and can cause flaring.

While it's burning

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always extinguish before leaving the room or going to sleep — make sure the wick ember is fully out, not just the flame. Keep lit candles away from children and pets, and well clear of anything flammable: curtains, bedding, books, paper, and decorations. Burn in a well-ventilated room and avoid lighting too many candles in a small, enclosed space.

Knowing when to stop

Discontinue use when approximately 10mm of wax remains in the shell — burning beyond this point risks overheating the coconut shell. Do not burn for more than 3 hours at a time. If your candle repeatedly flickers, smokes heavily, or the flame grows unusually high, extinguish it. Allow it to cool completely, trim the wick, check for nearby air movement, then relight.

Handling with care

Never touch or move a candle while the wax is liquid — the shell and wax will be hot. Allow to cool fully before handling. Do not use candles as a primary light source during power outages — battery-powered lights are a safer alternative.

Our candles, your home

Each candle is hand-set in a natural coconut shell by artisans in India. The shell is a living material — beautiful, individual, and heat-sensitive. Treat it well and it will fill your space with warmth for many hours. For any concerns about your candle, contact us at hello@cocoandkraft.com.au
